Original Italian theatrical poster for Bicycle Thieves (Ladri di biciclette).

29 November 2026

We’re closing out November with a screening of Bicycle Thieves (1948), directed by Vittorio De Sica. As usual, the People’s University Committee will facilitate a lively discussion afterwards about the political themes of the film!

In post-war Rome, Antonio finally finds a job that could help support his family. But the job requires a bicycle, and when it’s stolen, his chance at a livelihood is put at risk. Together with his young son Bruno, he searches the city in the hope of getting it back.

Through this simple story, Bicycle Thieves brings us face to face with the pressures of poverty and unemployment. What happens when a family’s survival depends on something so easily taken away? And how do these conditions shape the choices people are forced to make?

Join us to watch the film and talk through these questions together. Screening time, venue and registration details will be announced here. Message us on Instagram or email us if you’re interested in attending!
