Caliban and the Witch

Published 23 January 2025 · By People's University Committee

How are capitalism, gender, and violence historically entangled?

This workshop centers on Silvia Federici’s Caliban and the Witch, examining primitive accumulation, the witch hunts, and the disciplining of women’s bodies as foundational to the rise of capitalism. We’ll trace Federici’s arguments about reproductive labor, enclosure, and the production of gendered social relations, and read the text as both historical analysis and political intervention.

Open to those interested in feminist theory, Marxism, and the history of capitalism.
